Graphic Designer

Storm Thorgerson , an English graphic designer, was born in 1944. He is known for his work with many rock bands.  The rock bands include Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and many more.

Storm Thorgerson was a key member of the British graphic art group Hipgnosis, and designed many of their most famous single and album covers.  He also runs a design studio called Storm Studios – This is a  loose group of freelancers.  Thorgersons most famous designs are those for Pink Floyd. His design for The Dark Side of the Moon has been called one of the greatest album covers of all time.

Although designed by Thorgerson, the cover was drawn by Hipgnosis designer George Hardie. Many of his designs are noticed for their surreal elements.. He often places objects out of their traditional contexts, especially with vast spaces around them, to give them an awkward appearance while highlighting their beauty. To quote Thorgerson, "I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality...to bend reality. Some of my works beg the question of is it real or not?" Several books have been devoted to surveying Thorgerson's work which spans more than four decades.

Based on his 1973 iconic album cover The Dark Side of the Moon for Pink Floyd, Thorgerson has amended this classic image to reflect the theme 'Mending Broken Hearts'. In Teardrop, Thorgerson harnesses the scientific imagery of light passing through a prism and softens it by replacing the hard-edged prism with a teardrop. The fluid shapes of the rainbow colors that emanate from the teardrop are joyous and hopeful compared to the monotone scheme on the opposite side of the composition, suggesting that we must suffer before we can rejoice. He often places objects out of their traditional contexts, especially with vast spaces around them, to give them an awkward appearance while highlighting their beauty.
