Phillip Meggs

Phillip Meggs

An American graphic designer, professor, historian and author, Phillip Meggs is known for being one of the most important historians of design. He is well known for his knowledgeable reputation among the graphic design community since he released, A History of Graphic Design, one of the first books to a definitive and linear history of graphic design. Today, it is still used as a basis for an introduction and overview of the graphic design field and has been translated into more than five different languages for use all over the world. Phillip Meggs’ curiosity in art began when he was 16 and began to take an interest in letter forms and type. He attended college at Virginia Commonwealth University, and earned a position teaching there shortly after and started the graphic design program there. Unfortunately he passed away from leukemia in 2002, but his legacy lives on among graphic designers across the country.
